"SMART WOMEN KNOW FACTS VS. MYTHS ABOUT ZIKA VIRUS"

More About Megan

We are excited to announce Dr. Megan Wise de Valdez as the provocateur for the October session of the 2016-2017 Smart Women Series hosted by Texas A&M University – San Antonio.

Dr. Megan Wise de Valdez is part of the city’s Zika task force headed by San Antonio Metropolitan Public Health.  In addition, she is an associate professor of Biology at Texas A&M University-San Antonio where she mentors an enthusiastic team of undergraduate researchers.

As part of her role as a mosquito ecology expert, Dr. Wise de Valdez has headed up the city’s mosquito surveillance efforts in order to track the seasonal abundance of the Zika vector Aedes aegypti or better known as the yellow fever mosquito, across residential homes in our city.  This research has led to stories in USA Today, National and Texas Public Radio, as well as stories on local news channel 4 WOAI.

Dr. Wise de Valdez will provide

  • An over-view of the current status of Zika infections in the United States and Texas,
  • “Knowns” and “unknowns” about how Zika is transmitted and the illnesses it can cause, and
  • How we are preparing in San Antonio, and what results from her research this summer can tell us about our risks in San Antonio.
