October POWERhour!

Featuring
  Marcy Meffert

We are very pleased that San Antonio Express-News columnist and author, Marcy Meffert has accepted our invitation to be our Fall POWERhour! speaker, being held at the Old San Francisco Steakhouse.

After 20 years as a military wife, mother of five, and community volunteer, Marcy Meffert retired from full-time homemaking in 1974 to begin a new career - first as a free-lance writer and editor, then in 1994 in what she calls the ultimate volunteer job of serving on the Leon Valley, Texas, City Council.

Meffert continued to serve the Leon Valley community as a Council Member for four years and Mayor for six years; in addition to Chairman of the Alamo Area Council of Governments (AACOG) Board of Directors for two one-year terms, chaired the Greater Bexar County Council of Cities and Texas Municipal League (TML) Region 7.

Marcy Meffert currently writes the Elders Express column for the San Antonio Express-News S.A.Life section.  Her humor columns have been in San Antonio papers and syndicated internationally. She has 40 years as a columnist and staff or freelance writer for weekly and daily newspapers in San Antonio and New Orleans, local and national magazines. She is also a well know author  of the book, "MADAM MAYOR: How I learned to Love Government and Hate Politics in 10 Intriguing Years."

Since becoming the SA Express-News Elders Express Columnist, she has spoken to various local civic groups on a variety of topics, including How to write your life story in one easy lesson (to OASIS), Where Column Ideas Originate, and How she learned to love government and hate politics in 10 intriguing years.

Furthermore, she has more than 50 years experience as a volunteer and community leader in professional, civic, church, Girl Scouting, and USAF women’s groups.  She has served on the AACOG Criminal Justice Advisory Committee, the Northside Education Foundation (NEF) Board (Grants committee) and is the founding Chair Emeritus of  Los Leones Student Arts Festival.  She has established a partnership with the City of Leon Valley, NEF, and Northside  Independent School District (NISD).  She is the Career Days speaker for both Providence High School and NISD elementary schools.

These credentials are just the tip of the iceberg!  Join us to hear the rest of Marcy's journey.
